Arts and Culture Matter

There is a rising tide that recognizes the power and contribution of artistic and cultural expression in rural and rurban communities.  Such activities encourage reflection, stimulate creative thinking, sustain livelihoods and may offer alternative options to encourage social change.

But a vibrant artistic and cultural sector depends on strong leadership that recognizes the value of such activities as well as solid institutions and systems that work together to develop resources, promote identity in artistic expression and broaden people’s understanding of and participation in a variety of issues that affect the community-at-large.

Your community can support arts and cultural activities by:

  • Supporting discussions among community thinkers, government decision-makers, business leaders and other influential people from a variety of backgrounds;
  • Offering seminars or workshops for professional and leadership development in the field of arts and culture;
  • Creating a network for engagement, information sharing and opportunity and resource identification; or
  • Making available current research on related issues related to arts, culture, and sustainable development.

Creative expression and participation is a powerful way to build healthy, diverse, and resilient communities.
