Cool Little Towns Collaborate for Success

Just down the road from me is a collection of ‘cool little towns’ … a regional tourism and marketing initiative spearheaded by colleagues who live and work in the area.

Route 40 Soup Co. Chef Mark Klaudt - Turner ValleyDesigned to promote the unique attractions, businesses and activities for the communities of Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Longview, High River and Nanton, Alberta, Cool Little Towns is just that – a collection of cool things to see and do when in the region.

It’s an idea that can be adopted anywhere.

With travel trends indicating people are taking shorter trips closer to home (while seeking authentic experiences), banding together to link and promote common themes, businesses and attractions makes sense.

Marketing is expensive.  Collaboration, however, can be part of a great marketing strategy.

How?

1.  Enlist

  • Bring together like-minded individuals, organizations and businesses with similar goals and missions
  • Develop criteria early
  • Be consistent and fair

2.  Invest

  • What will everyone contribute in time, talent and money?
  • Does everyone contribute equally?
  • Divide and conquer tasks, or hire out to ensure completion

3.  Evolve

  • Regularly add something new
  • Stay newsworthy and relevant

4.  Evaluate

  • What’s working?  What’s not?
  • In-house and external reporting and information sharing
  • Know when to fold ‘em

Make it easy.  Keep it fun … and work together when you can.
