Do ‘Buy Local’ Campaigns Work?

To try and slow the flow of dollars leaving a community, many local organizations or municipalities initiate a ‘Buy Local’ campaign with the intent to either raise awareness of the impact of lost local retail sales or make citizens feel guilty for shopping out-of-town.
But do these campaigns actually work?
Research suggests that they do. I know I prefer to shop and dine locally … and I know I’m not alone.
Residents leave their communities to shop when local options are limited by price, quality, or selection.
When these options are addressed, residents will stay and spend their dollars in their community.
Community leaders need to identify local gaps and take a long-range approach to growing and diversifying their retail base by increasing price, quality, or selection options.
