Leverage Local Tourism Efforts With ‘Locals Know’ Campaign

Posted on | August 20, 2009 | 1 Comment

With folks watching their pocketbooks and staying closer to home this vacation season, many businesses reliant on tourism are feeling the pinch.

Yet the tourism industry contributes to many local, regional, and provincial economies, and a summer campaign by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) encourages Canadians to explore their own country … spending their dollars in Canadian communities along the way.

‘Locals Know’localsknow.cais the integrated marketing campaign that challenges individuals to find hidden, exotic and exciting places that already exist ‘at home.’

Going beyond the usual sweeping vista shots and panoramic views of traditional tourism destinations, unique, close-cropped photos appear timeless and low-res videos project a sense of excitement – asking viewers “where is this?” and then stating the obvious … locals know.”

The campaign reasons that Canadians are best equipped to tell others about their experiences, and so people are encouraged to upload images showcasing their area’s most popular, undiscovered, or original spots.  Comments and discussion are also welcome.

With Forbes recently citing ’Locals Know’ on its Top 10 Travel Campaign list and Canadian celebrities joining in with their favorite places, the campaign has gained traction with an increasing number of people looking for vacation options closer to home.

Although the campaign has finished its official eight week national run for 2009, Canadians can still participate on the localsknow.ca website.

The campaign was made possible by special stimulus funding from the Government of Canada, and the CTC is investing $10 million per year, for the next two years, to further support the tourism industry and to stimulate Canada’s economy.

So … what are you waiting for?

Visit the site.  Upload your community’s original spots.  Participate and promote your area!
