THE RURBAN FRINGE

Reclaiming Raped Areas

Here’s something we need to advocate more for … large corporations making the effort and investment required to reclaim and reinvigorate “stripped” land.

For instance, Genesee Mine, a coal mine located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Edmonton, Alberta, restored 600 hectares of land into productive farm land and wildlife habitat, earning them the 2009 Alberta Chamber of Resources’ Major Reclamation Award.  The award recognizes the mine’s reclamation achievement, past and current reclamation research initiatives and the ongoing communication and involvement with the region.  They were nominated by Alberta Environment.

And while there will always be arguments against mining and utilizing the resources found in our natural environment, resource development is inevitable.

But regions that source and work with companies that value efforts such as this, will be rewarded with the benefits of both economic stimulation and environmental reclamation.

This needs to become the norm, not the exception.
