Trauma FarmI’m an avid fan of Canadian literature and, each fall, eagerly anticipate the lists of authors nominated for various literary prizes.

This year, it was great to see the nomination of a predominantly rural writer, Brian Brett, for his non-fiction work Trauma Farm.

Reviews of Trauma Farm have been overwhelming positive, including …

Trauma Farm reads almost as an invitation, a provocation, to make the natural, rooted, harmonious existence our own in whatever small ways we can.  It is a striking, stunning book, easily one of the best of the year.”

 - National Post, October 3, 2009

“As is the case with most small independent farmers these days, they don’t make a living from the farm, but they have made a life.  Trauma Farm is an account of that life, of the day-to-day joys and frustrations of the farmer’s existence, while at the same time offering a sweeping historical examination of the history of agriculture and the current state of the world.  It’s a … stunning book.”

- Ottawa Citizen, October 3, 2009

Trauma Farm is a passionate memoir of life on a small farm.  Brian Brett rants and raves, bringing us his own version of guns and roses in the guise of wisdom and wit.  A great book that asks the reader to read it and then joyfully read it again.”

- Patrick Lane, June 11, 2009

And while I’ve yet to pick up this book, I will, and encourage you to do so, as well.

Trauma Farm is shortlisted for the 2009 Writers’ Trust of Canada Non-Fiction Prize.  The winners will be announced in Toronto on November 24, 2009.

Update:  Trauma Farm is the 2009 winner of the Writers’ Trust of Canada Non-Fiction Prize.
