The Rurban Fringe ‘Eat Local’ Challenge: Day 13
Posted on | June 30, 2009 | No Comments
With almost two weeks of the challenge under my belt, I’m still getting the hang of ’thinking local’ … and ensuring as many food items as possible are sourced locally.
More than ever, it’s about consciously trying to make the best food choices I can.
And while last week was absolutely crazy in my world, I did manage to spend 12% of weekly grocery purchases on local items, but fell apart when it came to meal planning.
So, for inspiration, I did some research and, in several places, came across the following guidelines …
If not LOCALLY PRODUCED, then Organic.
If not ORGANIC, then Family Farm.
If not FAMILY FARM, then Local Business.
If not LOCAL BUSINESS, then Fair Trade.
Also known as The Locavore Pledge, I found these guidelines helpful for providing a frame of reference of what I should consider when sourcing local foods. The order may change – that is, I will make the effort to support family farms and those who produce local food items over externally produced organics – but the intent will remain the same.
There are lots of options for doing something right.
What are you doing?

Note: Cheers to blogging colleague Saskboy for taking up the challenge in his area.
