The Rurban Fringe ‘Eat Local’ Challenge: Day 5 OR The 100 Mile Grocery Aisle Concept
Posted on | June 22, 2009 | No Comments
After announcing my ‘Eat Local’ challenge last week … I have to admit, I’ve not started off well.
Due to a change in operating hours, I missed the opening evening of our weekly Farmer’s Market … and then failed miserably when I went looking for local products while grocery shopping for the week.
Only 4% of my grocery purchases were from local sources. Ouch.
I was actually surprised. Surprised at how little local food my regular grocery store stocked. Surprised that local items were shelved in various places throughout the store. Surprised that the clerk looked at me oddly when I mentioned what I was doing, and that I would love to see more local product made available.
It spawned a thought … why not create a 100 Mile Grocery Aisle?
That is, create one aisle devoted exclusively to regional products, showcasing what each season produces and creating relationships with local growers and producers.
Not only would such a concept create a unique competitive advantage, it would also speak to those consumers who shop with taste, health, and convenience foremost in mind.
Hmmmm … I smell an opportunity …
