The Rurban Fringe ‘Eat Local’ Challenge: Day 66
Posted on | August 22, 2009 | No Comments
With vacations, day trips, and loads of friends and family to entertain this summer … I’ve found it both easy – and extremely challenging – to stay true to the challenge from time-to-time.
While vacationing in British Columbia, for instance, there was local food available everywhere … from small fruit stands to large farm operations.
DeMille’s Farm Market – which carries an abundance of local fare and offers family-friendly activities - was a special find as was Gort’s Gouda Cheese Farm. Granite Creek Estate Wines also deserves a special mention, with great wines and enthusiastic staff to guide you through a tasting.
Closer to home, harvest season is upon us … with fresh corn, tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, and potatoes appearing in our local Farmer’s Market and around the area. I, for one, couldn’t be happier, as I’ve been feeding the masses at our home, with as many fresh local veggies for salads, meat and potatoes for grilling, and berries and wine for dessert that I can muster.
And while it’s taken a more conscious effort on my part to ensure food products are local, so far the flavour, freshness, and feeling of directly contributing to my local economy are making this a worthwhile challenge.
Are there any favorite local vendors/businesses in your area?
