The Rurban Fringe ‘Eat Local’ Challenge: Day 91

Goodness … it’s hard to believe that summer – and the challenge – is almost over.
I’ve had a great week – I’ve enjoyed local produce in salads and regionally produced beef in a fondue … all washed down with wines easily found in Western Canada. Yum.
My focus of late has slightly shifted, too, to supporting local meat growers … especially pork producers.
Everyone knows it’s been a terrible year for the pork industry; prices below the cost of production have persisted and the industry took a savage beating when it was mistakenly believed that swine flu could be contracted by eating pork.
What not long ago was a thriving industry – especially in Western Canada – the current situation threatens the long-term viability of safe, locally grown pork from a number of producers.
Just as I wish to support growers within my local, regional, provincial, Western, or Canadian hemisphere first … I also wish to support meat and other producers in that order.
I understand it’s not always feasible, but it certainly makes me feel better knowing where my food was produced.
