After a long winter, I’m excited that our local farmer’s market is finally ready for the season!
With the explosion of interest in eating local, we – as consumers – have an ever increasing choice of products and ways to shop for locally grown and produced items.
Practically speaking, local food production can be thought of in concentric circles that starts with growing food at home. The next circle might be food grown in your immediate community, then your province/state, region, and country. The ability to purchase and/or consume local items depends, of course, on the seasons and where you reside.
There’s no doubting the benefits … from supporting your local economy to eating fresh food that tastes great and comes from a safe and reliable source, eating local is now mainstream.
So, for the next 100 days, I’m challenging myself to a 100 Mile Diet.
As I’ll be making a more conscious effort to eat local over the next three months, my goals include:
- to make at least 10% of all food purchases locally;
- meal planning, so less food is wasted; and
- freezing/preserving seasonal fruit and veggies to enjoy later.
Will you join me?
I’ll be posting on my progress throughout the summer … feel free to drop me a line to share information and ideas on your own challenge, or join the discussion here at any time.
Here’s to a tasty summer!
