THE RURBAN FRINGE

‘The Way We Get By’

With volunteerism on my mind this week, I was astounded to come across the website promoting the new documentary release, The Way We Get By, a film which begins …

“… as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters – a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq [and] quickly turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality.”

I was blown away.  And I just viewed the trailer.

I have the most profound respect for those who serve, especially as close family members have served as both military and Royal Canadian Mounted Police personnel.  What these people do is for the benefit of us all.

Although screenings have been mostly for US audiences, the international Hot Docs film festival in Toronto is showing the film here in Canada.

Find out more about the film here.
